The Learning Hive
A nature-based learning community for children and families in Stockport and Tameside
Something is growing.
The Learning Hive is a nature-based learning community for children aged 5–16 and their families — rooted in seasonal rhythms, creativity, and genuine connection. It’s not a forest school. It’s not a curriculum. It’s something closer to what learning looks like when children are trusted to follow their curiosity, supported by adults who believe that is enough.
A hive is a working, living space. Everyone has a role. Something is always being made. Children, parents, and facilitators all contribute — tending the land, growing food, making things, telling stories, learning together across ages. That’s the vision we’re building toward.
We’re currently developing The Learning Hive at a dedicated community site — with land, growing space, and the possibility of chickens, bees, a polytunnel, and a real working community garden. We’re building slowly and intentionally, and founding families will help shape what it becomes.
If this resonates, we’d love to hear from you.
WHO IS IT FOR?
The Learning Hive is for children and families who need something different. That might mean:
- Home-educated children of any age looking for community and connection
- Children currently out of school or struggling in a mainstream setting
- Neurodiverse children who thrive in small, unhurried, outdoor environments
- Families who want to be genuinely part of what their child is doing — not just drop off and collect
- Anyone aged 5–16 who needs more space, more nature, and more time to be themselves
We have experience supporting SEND and children who need a more flexible, nurturing approach. If you’re not sure whether it’s right for your child, just get in touch — a conversation costs nothing.
THE VISION
Imagine a space where children arrive in the morning and the day unfolds around them. Where a group of mixed ages tends a vegetable patch together, builds something in the workshop, tends to the animals, follows a creative project, or simply sits under a tree with a book. Where parents are present and involved — not watching from a distance but genuinely part of the community. Where learning isn’t something that happens to children but something they move through at their own pace, in their own way, with the land and the people around them as their teachers.
That’s The Learning Hive.
It’s rooted in Free to Learn philosophy — the belief that children are natural learners when given the right conditions. And it’s rooted in Living Nature’s therapeutic, relational approach — the belief that connection, creativity, and time in nature are not extras. They are essentials.
WHAT IT COULD LOOK LIKE
The Learning Hive is still being shaped — and that’s deliberate. What it becomes will depend on the children and families who come to it. But the seeds of the vision include:
Tending the land — growing food, caring for animals, understanding seasonal cycles through direct experience
Making and building — woodworking, natural crafts, construction, creating things that have a real purpose
Community growing — a shared garden where children learn where food comes from and what it takes to grow it
Social enterprise — children involved in producing, making, and perhaps selling — real-world learning with real-world meaning
Creative and storytelling — The Living Nature Publishing House strand, where children become authors, illustrators, performers, and makers of stories that matter
Free to Learn time — unstructured space for children to follow their own curiosity, direct their own projects, and simply be
Multi-age community — older children naturally supporting younger ones, parents alongside, everyone with a role
This isn’t a day where children are entertained. It’s a place where they belong.
OUR APPROACH
The Learning Hive is led by Josie Lynch — qualified teacher, integrative psychotherapist, and founder of Living Nature CIC. Josie brings over a decade of experience working with children, families, and communities, and a deep commitment to therapeutic, relational, nature-based practice.
The approach draws on Free to Learn philosophy, therapeutic education, and the simple truth that children thrive when they feel safe, seen, and trusted.
Groups will be small. The pace will be unhurried. Parents will be part of the space. And the community will help build what it becomes — from the ground up, literally.
CO-CREATION
This programme is being built with families, not just for them.
Founding families who register their interest now will be part of shaping The Learning Hive from the beginning — including input on how sessions are structured, what the community values look like, and how the space develops over time.
This is a community interest company. The community genuinely has a voice here. If you want to be part of building something rather than just attending something, this is for you.

We’re building slowly and intentionally — we’d rather get it right than rush it. Register your interest now and you’ll be among the first to know when we’re ready to launch
We’re currently developing a dedicated community site. More details will be shared with founding families as plans develop.
No. The Learning Hive is open to any child aged 5–16 who needs something different — whether home-educated, currently out of school, or simply thriving better outside a mainstream setting.
Forest school is brilliant, but this isn’t that. The Learning Hive is more about learning community than outdoor skills. It’s therapeutic in its approach, creative in its method, seasonal in its rhythm, and rooted in genuine co-creation with families. Our facilitator is a qualified psychotherapist and former teacher — that shapes everything.
Yes. Many of the children we work with are neurodiverse or have additional needs. Small groups, outdoor settings, a flexible unhurried approach, and a therapeutically trained facilitator tend to work well. Please get in touch to talk about your child specifically.Yes. Our team is experienced in supporting SEND and welcomes children who need a more nurturing, flexible approach. Please contact us to discuss your child’s needs.
Yes — and we actively encourage it. The Learning Hive is a community model, not a childcare service. Parents who want to be part of the space are genuinely welcome.
We’ll use three-tier community pricing, the same model as our Wild & Well Kids Club. We’re also exploring a contribution model where families who can give time rather than money can be involved in maintaining and developing the land. Nobody will be turned away for financial reasons.
